What is a low alloy steel​?

Definition
● Low alloy steel refers to steel with a total alloying element content of less than 5%, mainly including manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), titanium (Ti) and other elements. These alloying elements improve the performance of steel, making it superior to ordinary carbon steel in terms of strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

Composition characteristics
● Carbon content: usually between 0.1%-0.25%, a lower carbon content helps to improve the toughness and weldability of steel.
● Manganese (Mn): The content is between 0.8%-1.7%, which improves strength and toughness and improves processing performance.
● Silicon (Si): The content is 0.2%-0.5%, which improves the strength and hardness of steel and has a deoxidation effect.
● Chromium (Cr): The content is 0.3%-1.2%, which enhances corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance and forms a protective film.
● Nickel (Ni): The content is 0.3%-1.0%, which improves toughness, low temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.
● Molybdenum (Mo): The content is 0.1%-0.3%, which enhances strength, hardness and high temperature performance.
● Trace elements such as vanadium (V), titanium (Ti), and niobium (Nb): refine grains, improve strength and toughness.

Performance characteristics
● High strength: The yield strength can reach 300MPa-500MPa, which can withstand large loads at a smaller cross-sectional size, reduce the weight of the structure, and reduce costs.
● Good toughness: Even in low temperature environments, low alloy steel can still maintain good toughness, and is suitable for structures with high toughness requirements such as bridges and pressure vessels.
● Corrosion resistance: Elements such as chromium and nickel improve corrosion resistance, and are suitable for some mildly corrosive environments, reducing the cost of anti-corrosion treatment.
● Welding performance: Low alloy steel has good welding performance and is suitable for welded structures, but attention should be paid to controlling welding heat input and selecting appropriate welding materials.
